J. Robert Oppenheimer, born on April 22, 1904, was the man behind the Manhattan project ("J. Robert"). After Oppenheimer graduated from Harvard with a degree in Chemistry, he went on to earn his PhD at the age of 22("J.Robert Oppenheimer"). He became a teacher at the University of California at Berkeley ("J. Robert"). After news came to America that the Nazi’s were in the process of creating an atomic bomb, America, not wanting the Nazi’s to have more powerful weaponry than us, appointed Oppenheimer to be the director of the team of scientists who would create an atomic bomb. This team was referred to as the Manhattan project("People and Discoveries"). After the team researched for three years, the first atomic bomb was exploded on July 16, 1945 in a lab in Los Amalos. Only a month later, larger scale bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Unaware of the damage that the atomic bombs would create in Japan, after the bomb was dropped, Oppenheimer began to regret his participation in the Manhattan project. Oppenheimer opposed the development of more powerful hydrogen atomic bombs. In doing this, he was suspected to be part of the Communist party and his security clearances were taken away("J. Robert Oppenhiemer"). Sadly, Oppenheimer died of cancer of the throat in 1967("People and Discoveries").
